How to Check If Someone Is Tracking Your Location

A walkthrough for finding out who can see where you are, and how to take back control safely.

Location sharing should always be something you have agreed to. If you are not sure who can see where you are, these checks will tell you.

On iPhone

  1. Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Safety Check. It shows who you share your location and other information with, and lets you stop sharing in one place.
  2. Open Find My → People to see anyone you are sharing your location with.
  3. Under Settings → [your name], scroll down to see every device signed in to your Apple Account, and remove any you do not recognise.

On Android

  1. In Google Maps, tap your profile picture, then Location sharing, to see who can see your location.
  2. Go to Settings → Location → App location permissions and look for apps you do not recognise.
  3. Check the devices signed in to your Google Account at myaccount.google.com, under Security.

Look for other apps and trackers

Look for family-locator apps you did not install yourself. Phones also warn you if an unknown AirTag or other tracker seems to be travelling with you. On Android, look for Unknown tracker alerts in Settings, often under Safety & emergency.

If someone knows your passwords

Anyone who knows your Apple Account or Google password may be able to see your location. Change the password, switch on two-factor authentication, and sign out of devices you do not recognise.

If you are in an abusive situation, plan before you switch things off

Suddenly stopping location sharing can alert the person who was watching. The free, 24-hour National Domestic Abuse Helpline on 0808 2000 247 can help you plan safely. In an emergency, call 999. If you cannot speak, stay on the line and press 55 when prompted.
